How to Compare Your DEGIRO Portfolio to an Index ETF

By The Invest Tracker Team Last updated: September 19, 2026 Reading time: ~3 minutes

DEGIRO shows your profit, but not whether you actually beat the market. To compare your DEGIRO portfolio to an index ETF, export your account statement as a CSV and upload it to a tracker that replays your real buys and sells against the ETF's historical prices. You then see, side by side, how you did versus simply buying an index like the MSCI World or S&P 500.

Seeing your own return line is good; knowing whether you beat the market is better. A fair comparison has to use the same money at the same moments, otherwise it is meaningless. Here is how to get a proper, timing-matched benchmark.

Why a benchmark comparison matters

Step-by-step

Step 1: Export your DEGIRO CSV

On the DEGIRO desktop website, open Inbox → Account statement, set the date range back to your first transaction, and export to CSV. Full walkthrough: How to Export Your Trades from DEGIRO.

Step 2: Upload it to Invest Tracker

Open Invest Tracker and drop in the CSV. It reconstructs your full portfolio history, so the benchmark can be lined up against your real transactions.

Step 3: Pick a benchmark and compare

Under the Profits Over Time chart, choose an index ETF in the Benchmark selector and click Compare. A second line appears showing how the same money would have grown in that index.

How the comparison works

Invest Tracker replays your real buy and sell moments and amounts against an index ETF's historical prices, for example iShares Core MSCI World (IWDA), Vanguard FTSE All-World (VWCE), the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100. Because the same money and timing are used, it is a fair, timing-matched "what if I had just bought the index instead" comparison. You can also benchmark against any individual stock you already hold.

Good to know: all of the popular benchmarks you can choose are accumulating ETFs priced in euros, which means their dividends are already reinvested and included in the benchmark line. So you are comparing your total return, including your own dividends, against the index's total return, not an unfair price-only version.

Frequently asked

Which index should I compare against?

Pick one that matches your strategy. A globally diversified investor often uses the MSCI World or FTSE All-World; a US-focused investor might use the S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100.

Is this the same as DEGIRO's own figures?

No. The comparison is calculated from your own CSV export and may differ from DEGIRO's reporting. It is for information only, not financial advice.
